Salem is the capital city of the state of Oregon and also the county seat of Marion County. Salem, Oregon is situated about 46 miles SW of Portland in Oregon's Willamette River valley, one of the US's most fertile agricultural regions. Salem lies at the junction of Oregon State Highways 22, 213, and 221. Interstate I-5 provides transportation north to Portland and south to the city of Eugene.

About Salem
Salem replaced Oregon City as the territorial capital in 1851, but in 1855, it temporarily became the capital by the city of Corvallis (40 miles to the south). This arrangement lasted less than one year. Salem was later restored to its former status as the territorial capital. Salem became incorporated as a city in 1857, with Oregon achieving statehood status just two years later. One of Oregon state's premier cultural events takes place in Salem every July.  The annual Salem Art Fair & Festival, has been a tradition for over half a century. The celebration is set among historic Bush's Pasture Park, the largest juried art festival in Oregon, and one of the strongest community-driven events in the Pacific Northwest. Another premiere city event is the World Beat Festival, which takes place every June. The two-day celebration at Riverfront Park features music, food, crafts, and includes a Dragon Boat race. Salem's largest event is the Oregon State Fair, which is celebrated at the Oregon State Fairgrounds. The event offers exhibits and competitions typical of a traditional state fair and also features big-ticket concerts.
